Rockstar Games finally addresses ‘Cyberleek’ GTA 6 leaks

After over a week of gameplay leaks hitting the internet from one mysterious source, the creators of Grand Theft Auto 6 have put out a statement and, surprisingly, an apology to fans just before the extended look premieres tomorrow on Netflix. In a statement posted on social media early Wednesday morning, Rockstar Games has finally addressed the viral GTA 6 leaks. In the statement, the company expresses their disappointment over the unauthorized clips, writing “having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.” Interestingly, the studio, which has been ridiculously tight-lipped regarding GTA 6 in their marketing strategy ever since the game was officially in development in 2022, apologized for the wait. “We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has – from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.” While initially entirely silent on the subject, their parent company – Take-Two Interactive – did begin quietly issuing subpoenas to other tech giants in a bid to hunt down the leaker via chat logs and account information on Discord and Microsoft. An apology from Rockstar Games is uncharacteristic, but perhaps not surprising considering the last week of events. While Cyberleek is undermining the planned reveal for GTA 6 (through corporate synergy on a Netflix special) and spoiling some aspects of the gameplay, the leaks have provided fans with what they’ve been waiting, begging, and theorizing about for years now: literally any content. Two trailers over the course of years simply doesn’t cut it for marketing one of the most anticipated games of the decade. Perhaps after the Netflix trailer tomorrow, Rockstar Games will begin to share more liberally with fans about what to expect from the full game and steal away some of Cyberleek’s thunder. For now, fans will have to wait and see just how much Cyberleek spoiled and what might be next for both leaks and official content in the long wait for November.
