The new system was showcased in the extended look for GTA 6, which premiered on Netflix and it will be released on Rockstar Games’ official channels soon. The footage offers a closer look at how Jason and other characters can interact with people and objects throughout Leonida. Image via Rockstar Unlike GTA 5, where character dialogue is largely scripted and players have limited control over what protagonists say, GTA 6 appears to give players more contextual interaction options. Without using a traditional dialogue wheel that takes up a large portion of the screen, GTA 6 is going to take a scenic route by displaying a small contextual prompt when Jason approaches an interactable character. Once the conversation begins, available responses appear discreetly near the bottom-right corner of the screen. The approach keeps the game’s cinematic presentation intact while still giving players control over certain interactions. The extended footage also shows some of that system. Jason approaches a bouncer and is given different ways to get his attention. In another scene, Jason encounters a dog and receives three interaction options, including Scold, Pet, and Study. While some of these choices may not radically alter the story in the way dialogue systems in other games, but they provide another layer of interactivity within Rockstar’s open world. The new system also extends beyond conversations involving Jason and Lucia. Ambient NPC dialogue appears to be considerably more dynamic in GTA 6, with pedestrians reacting to what is happening around them. NPCs can comment on the player’s appearance, actions, and surroundings. For example, carrying a weapon can cause nearby characters to react differently. Threaten them and they might pick a fight with you or run away. Other factors such as the weather, time of day, and an NPC’s emotional state can influence what they say. Image via Rockstar Games Rockstar’s push for more immersive NPC conversations is part of a much larger effort to make the people of Vice City feel less like background characters. In the interview with The New York Times, Rockstar revealed that it created a dedicated team in Los Angeles focused on developing more realistic NPCs, with each character being individually art-directed rather than simply generated from a pool of interchangeable parts. The system could also allow NPCs to recognize Jason depending on previous encounters and react differently based on what he has done. NPCs may even continue conversations with one another as situations develop around them. The new dialogue mechanics are another example of Rockstar attempting to make GTA 6 feel less like a collection of scripted missions and more like a constantly evolving world. Players will still experience Rockstar’s heavily scripted cinematic sequences, but the ability to casually interact with characters and make small choices during exploration could make the time between major story moments more engaging. It remains unclear how much influence these dialogue choices will have on the wider story. Rockstar has not yet suggested that GTA 6 will feature a branching narrative on the scale of a traditional RPG. For now, the system appears designed primarily to make everyday interactions feel more organic. With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, players will not have to wait much longer to see how deep Rockstar’s new dialogue and NPC systems actually go.
